Tokeo la picha la Lil Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mya and Pink
2001: It was an epic moment in girl group history. Covering the genres of rap, pop and R&B, Lil Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mya, and Pink delivered a memorable performance of “Lady Marmalade” at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards, their collaboration from the soundtrack to the 2001 film Moulin Rouge.

Dressed in embellished lingerie and corsets, each songstress took her turn commanding the Movie Awards stage and singing her verse with K-I-M holding down the third verse with a raunchy rap about spending men’s money over her own. “We independent women, some mistake us for whores/I’m sayin, Why spend mine, when I could spend yours?”

The song and performance played into the the theme of the film. Directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge tells the story of a French courtesan who falls in love with a writer instead of the duke she’s supposed to be wooing. Among the award show’s three performances, “Lady Marmalade” was the standout and still goes down in MTV history as one of the best live performances at their awards shows. Any ’90s baby who was obsessed with Kim, Christina Aguilera, Mya, or Pink remembers this TV moment in nostalgic detail.
